ZIMBABWE’S US$100 MILLION SCANDAL AND THE JAILING OF OPPOSITION LEADERS

One of the biggest corruption scandals in Zimbabwe’s history is the US$100 million Zimbabwe Electoral Commission scandal. This scandal involves Wicknell Chivhayo, Mike Chimombe, Moses Mpofu, and top government officials. These people were trusted with public money, but instead of using it for the right reasons, they took it for themselves.

The Zimbabwe government gave them this money to help with elections, but now they are accused of corruption. Because of this, Chivhayo and his partners are now in jail, facing two serious cases of corruption. This is one of the saddest and most shocking corruption cases in Zimbabwe today.

At the same time, Zimbabwe is preparing for very important elections. But instead of making sure the elections are free and fair, the ruling party, ZANU PF, is using force to silence political opponents. They have arrested opposition leaders like Job Sikhala and Jacob Harivhume. This is a very big problem because it shows that the government does not want people to speak freely. Instead, they are putting those who challenge them in jail.

Job Sikhala is one of the most well-known opposition leaders in Zimbabwe. He is a member of the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). He has always spoken against ZANU PF and stood for the rights of ordinary people. Many Zimbabweans respect him because he fights for justice. But instead of listening to him, ZANU PF has arrested him. They have accused him of crimes that many people believe are false. It is clear that they just want to stop him from talking.

Jacob Harivhume, another opposition leader, is also in jail. He is the leader of Transform Zimbabwe, a smaller opposition party. Like Sikhala, he has been calling for change and justice in Zimbabwe. Even though his party is not as big as others, his voice is important. But the government does not want to hear him, so they have put him in jail too. This shows that ZANU PF wants to silence anyone who does not agree with them, even small opposition leaders.

These arrests are part of a bigger problem in Zimbabwe. The government is using fear and force to stop people from speaking freely. For many years, human rights groups have warned that Zimbabwe does not allow free speech, free press, or freedom to protest. But things are getting worse. The government is now arresting more opposition members, and this is worrying as the elections are coming soon.

Elections should be fair and free. People should be able to vote without fear. But if opposition leaders are arrested, can the elections really be free? Many Zimbabweans are starting to wonder if their votes will count. They are losing trust in the election process. The arrests of Sikhala and Harivhume only make things worse. They show that ZANU PF is doing everything it can to stay in power, even if it means jailing its opponents.

The world needs to pay attention to Zimbabwe. The international community must take action and tell the government to respect human rights. Other countries and big organizations can put pressure on Zimbabwe’s government to do the right thing. They can apply sanctions or speak out strongly against these arrests. Zimbabwe should not be allowed to silence people without consequences.

People in Zimbabwe must also come together to demand justice. Civil society groups can organize peaceful protests. They can speak out in the media and help those who have been jailed. Lawyers can assist Sikhala, Harivhume, and others who are facing unfair treatment. When people stand together, they can push for change.

Zimbabwe has the potential to be a great country. But for that to happen, the government must stop using fear and oppression. Democracy means giving people a voice, not arresting them for speaking. Zimbabwe’s future depends on justice, fairness, and respect for human rights. The world must stand with Zimbabweans now to fight for a better country.

  1. You’re twisting the facts to serve your political agenda. The US$100 million Electoral Commission matter is being blown out of proportion by those who want to distract from the real achievements of our government. Instead of admitting that these issues involve a few isolated incidents, you try to paint the entire party as corrupt. Our leadership has made significant progress in maintaining stability and promoting fairness in elections, and your biased narrative ignores that reality.

  2. Your article is nothing more than a politically motivated smear campaign. The arrests of Job Sikhala, Jacob Harivhume, and other opposition figures are justified because they have repeatedly incited unrest and threatened national stability. It’s not about silencing dissent—it’s about protecting Zimbabwe from those who would use false allegations to undermine our hard-won progress. Your one-sided portrayal only serves to bolster the opposition’s agenda.
