POKELLO’S SWEET LIFE IN ITALY WHILE ZIMBABWE SUFFERS
While most people in Zimbabwe are fighting every day just to survive, Pokello Nare, who is President Mnangagwa’s daughter-in-law, is living a rich and easy life. She just turned 40 and chose to celebrate her birthday at Lake Como in Italy, one of the most expensive places in Europe. This place is known for fancy hotels, rich visitors, and beautiful views. It is a dream place for the world’s richest people. While many families back home are looking for mealie meal and cooking oil, Pokello is out there enjoying what Italians call “la dolce vita,” which means “the sweet life.”
Many Zimbabweans online were angry and shocked when they saw the photos and videos from her birthday. Everything looked like it came from a movie. She wore designer clothes, ate fine food, drank expensive champagne, and posed with the beautiful Lake Como behind her. To most people who are suffering in Zimbabwe, this was another painful reminder of how unfair life has become under ZANU PF rule.
Zimbabwe’s economy is falling apart. Prices of basic goods keep going up. Most workers earn very little money, and even that money loses value fast. Schools cannot run properly. Hospitals do not have enough medicine. In many towns, people spend hours without water or electricity. Young people cannot find jobs. Life is hard for almost everyone. But instead of fixing these problems, people close to power are busy showing the world how rich they are.
Pokello is not an ordinary woman. She is married to the President’s son and is part of the powerful group that enjoys comfort while others struggle. She once called herself the “Queen of Swagger,” and she became famous through TV and fashion. Today, she is known more for showing off her expensive lifestyle on social media. Her birthday trip to Italy is not just a simple holiday. It shows how far the ruling family has moved away from the pain of the people.
This is not the first time the Mnangagwa family has been seen enjoying luxury while Zimbabwe suffers. His sons have been seen driving very expensive cars, wearing costly watches, and drinking alcohol that costs more than what a teacher earns in a whole year. While the rich connected to power get richer, the poor are told to be patient and make sacrifices.
Zimbabweans are tired of this. Many people are asking real and serious questions. How did Pokello afford this trip? Who paid for everything? How does she have so much money when the country is in deep crisis? These questions matter. But just like before, no one from the ruling family will say anything. They act as if they do not owe the people any answers.
It is a sad thing when a government that claims to care about its citizens allows such things to happen. A good leader must feel the pain of the people. A good government must make sure families have food, children can go to school, hospitals can help the sick, and workers can live in dignity. But ZANU PF has failed to provide this. Instead, it continues to protect the rich and punish anyone who speaks out.
Pokello’s trip to Lake Como is not only about her birthday. It is a sign of everything wrong in our country. The rich celebrate while the poor suffer. Leaders enjoy life while people starve. This is not the Zimbabwe we dream of. We must keep speaking out. We must keep telling the truth. One day, our voices will bring the change that Zimbabwe needs so that the country can work for everyone, not only for those in power.
