JOB SIKHALA SPEAKS OUT: ZIMBABWE’S FIGHT FOR FREEDOM

Job Sikhala, a lawyer and opposition leader from Zimbabwe, stood in front of the world at the United Nations 16th Geneva Summit for Human Rights and Democracy. He told his painful story of being in prison and how the Zimbabwean government is attacking freedom. Sikhala has been arrested 68 times in his life. The government sees him as a threat because he speaks for the people.

His most recent arrest happened on June 14, 2022. He was taken because he helped the family of Moreblessing Ali. Ali was an opposition activist and a mother. She was murdered in a brutal way, and her body was thrown into a well. Instead of looking for justice, the government turned on Sikhala. They locked him up in Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison for 595 days before trial.

Life in prison was hard. He was kept in solitary confinement. He was not given enough food. He had no access to medical care, even when he was very sick. He could not even see his lawyers at times. Once, when he was taken to the hospital, they chained him to the bed. The goal was clear: they wanted to break him.

Sikhala was thrown into court many times. The charges were weak, but the government did not care. They wanted to keep him away before the 2023 elections. President Mnangagwa’s government saw Sikhala as dangerous because he spoke against their wrongdoings. So, they used the law to silence him.

But it was not just Sikhala who suffered. His wife, Ellen, was also arrested for no real reason. They said she broke traffic laws, but it was all a plan to stop her from helping her husband. Sikhala’s law firm was destroyed, leaving him with nothing. Six students from the University of Zimbabwe were also arrested. Their crime? Asking for Sikhala’s release. The government was ready to punish anyone who stood with him.

At the Geneva Summit, Sikhala did not just talk about himself. He spoke for all Zimbabweans suffering under the current regime. He said torture and brutality were common. The economy was getting worse. The government did not want anyone to speak freely.

New laws were making things worse. Free speech was under attack. Protests were being shut down. People were afraid to talk. Education was also suffering. Young people had no hope. Drug addiction was rising because the future seemed so dark.

Sikhala also spoke about another danger: climate change. Southern Africa, including Zimbabwe, is facing serious droughts. But the Zimbabwean government is not handling the crisis well. International aid is being misused. Sikhala called for fair distribution of help to those who need it most.

Sikhala was not just telling his story to make people feel sorry for him. He was calling for action. He asked the world to stand with Zimbabweans who are fighting for freedom. He called for support for the National Democratic Working Group (NDWG), a group that wants to bring real democracy to Zimbabwe.

He ended his speech with a prayer. He asked for blessings for everyone listening. Even after everything he has been through, he still believes that if people come together, change is possible. He believes that Zimbabwe can be free again.

Now, the world has a choice. It can listen and act, or it can stay silent. But if it does nothing, the suffering in Zimbabwe will continue. The government will keep getting stronger. People like Sikhala will keep being thrown into prison.

Job Sikhala has spoken. The question is, will the world listen?
