FROM FOOD SURPLUS TO HUNGER: ZIMBABWE’S JOURNEY
Once, when Zimbabwe was known as Rhodesia and was under different rulers, it had plenty of food. It even sent food to other places. But now, things have changed. Zimbabwe is struggling with food, and many people are hungry. This change is surprising, but the reason behind it is clear. It is because of the group that has been ruling Zimbabwe for many years.
If Rhodesia had allowed all its people, regardless of colour, to have a say in making decisions, it would still have enough food. But instead, a group took over and didn’t let others share their ideas or help run the country. They only cared about keeping power and making themselves rich. This group didn’t follow the country’s main laws and chose people to help run the country not because they were good at it, but because they would support the group in charge.
Because of this, the big laws of the country were ignored and broken. People who had land were scared to use it to grow food because the rules were not clear and could change any time. So, food production went down, and hunger became a big problem. This situation is very sad and causes a lot of trouble, not just for Zimbabwe, but for nearby places too.
This story shows how important it is for everyone in a country to have a chance to share their thoughts and help make decisions. When only a small group makes all the decisions and breaks the rules, things can go very wrong. Zimbabwe’s journey from having plenty of food to many hungry people is a lesson for all. It tells us that fair rules and good leadership that listens to everyone are key to keeping people fed and happy.
It’s a tough lesson, but one that can help many places avoid hunger and ensure that everyone has enough to eat. So, understanding Zimbabwe’s food struggle is a way to learn and make better choices in the future.
