THE RIVER OF FEAR: SOUTH AFRICAN PARTY TARGETS ZIMBABWEAN MIGRANTS

Gayton McKenzie, leader of South Africa’s Patriotic Alliance (PA), has started a strong anti-immigrant campaign at the Limpopo River. This river is the natural border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. His actions have caused a big debate, with many people saying it is wrong.

McKenzie and his team went to the Limpopo River during the festive season. They stayed there for days, stopping people from crossing into South Africa. They shouted “Abahambe,” which means “they must go.” They did this to Zimbabweans trying to enter the country without papers.

McKenzie and his deputy, Kenny Kunene, posted videos of this on social media. In these videos, they are seen stopping people at the river. Some of these people were carrying small boats to cross the river. This river is dangerous because of crocodiles. Many people have died trying to cross it.

For many years, Zimbabweans have been moving to South Africa. They are looking for jobs and a better life. Zimbabwe’s economy is very bad, and many people are suffering. The country’s problems started a long time ago, under the rule of Robert Mugabe. His government made many bad decisions. When he left, the new president, Emmerson Mnangagwa, did not fix the problems. So, life in Zimbabwe became even harder. Because of this, many people try to leave.

McKenzie does not seem to care about these problems. He says his party stopped about 1,000 Zimbabweans from crossing the river. He is proud of this and says he will keep doing it.

He also blames the South African government for not controlling the border. He asks why there are no police or soldiers to stop people from crossing. He even had an argument with a farmer about water. His words and actions show how complicated the situation is.

McKenzie says he is protecting South Africa. But many people say his actions are xenophobic. This means he is targeting foreigners in a bad way. The people crossing the river are running away from poverty and suffering. They are not criminals. They just want a chance to survive.

Stopping them does not solve the real problem. Zimbabwe’s government must fix its economy so people do not need to leave. South Africa’s government must also manage immigration in a better way.

McKenzie’s campaign has made many people angry. Some support him, saying South Africa must protect its borders. Others say his actions are cruel and unfair.

The situation at the border is complicated. A country must protect its land. But it must also treat people with kindness. People leaving Zimbabwe are not doing it because they want to. They have no choice.

South Africa is also facing problems. Many people do not have jobs. The economy is weak. Some think immigrants are taking their jobs. But the truth is, the problem is bigger than that. The government must fix the economy so that everyone has a chance to work.

McKenzie’s actions do not help. He is not solving the problem. He is making it worse. Instead of chasing people away, leaders must find better ways to manage immigration.

The situation at the Limpopo River shows that South Africa has a big challenge. It must balance protecting its borders and treating people with respect. A good solution must be fair to everyone.

For now, the river remains a place of fear. Many Zimbabweans will still try to cross. And leaders like McKenzie will continue their campaigns. But until real solutions are found, the suffering will not end.
